THE PLASMID RESEARCH PROJECT – SPRING 2023

Plasmids are small, circular pieces of DNA that are often found in bacteria and can be used in genetic engineering to manipulate and transfer genes between organisms.

In the context of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, plasmids are used to deliver genetic material that codes for a specific part of the virus (such as the spike protein) into the cells of the recipient’s body.

There are several plasmid-based vaccines that have been developed for various diseases, including:

Inovio COVID-19 vaccine: This vaccine uses a plasmid to deliver genetic material that codes for the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.

Moderna COVID-19 vaccine: This vaccine also uses mRNA technology rather than plasmids, but like the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, it utilizes a lipid nanoparticle that has some similarities to a plasmid.

Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine: This vaccine uses mRNA technology rather than plasmids, but it does utilize a lipid nanoparticle that encases the mRNA and resembles a plasmid in some ways.

It’s worth noting that not all vaccines that use plasmids as a delivery vehicle are necessarily classified as “plasmid-based vaccines”. For example, the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine uses a viral vector (a genetically modified adenovirus) as the delivery vehicle, but the adenovirus contains a modified plasmid that delivers the genetic material for the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.

OUR ISSUE WITH PLASMID

That there is high contamination levels of the plasmid containing an SV40 promotor along with spike protein instructions that can be easily incorporated into the nucleus. Oncogenic negative effects may be likely.

Our project will give us the evidence needed to affirm our concern.
